Get Out of Your Way

At the end of each podcast, I close with a saying, “Remember the future you is waiting on you”. It’s a reminder to the listeners and me that no one else is in control of our destiny. We are in the captain’s seat to determine how and where we are going. That’s not to say that sometimes life will take us through storms. If you’ve read or listened to me read my book, then you know that my life hasn’t been absent of major challenges.

Each day, but especially during the work week, I make it a habit of starting off with positive and encouraging words. Two people I like to listen to are Earl Nightingale and Jim Rohn. I like them because they keep the message direct with no chasers, just hard-core facts. And they make no excuses about why you can’t do something or can’t become who you want to become. Jim Rohn has one talk that consistently reminds me of how life works. He makes an analogy between the seasons (winter, spring, summer, and fall) and the seasons of life. You can listen to a snippet of his talk here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QU333LmZ4CE

Sometimes life can be like winter, spring, summer, and fall. Each season has its fair share of work and benefits. The key to life is that you can’t get complacent in the season that you are in. Yes, enjoy yourself.. take trips, hang with friends, etc., but don’t get so caught up that you forget there is work in every season. For a garden not tended to will wither up and die.

I mentioned in a recent podcast that one of the things that hinders me from growing is when my channel gets blocked. The fortunate thing for me is that I know what blocks my channel(s) and for me that includes the following: drinking too much alcohol, eating foods that have little to no nutritional value, watching too much news, and being around negative people to name a few. So, the onus is on me to remove the blockages so that I get back on track. And the irony in this situation is that when I clear out the blockages, I find that I have more time than was imagined, more endurance, and negative things don’t impact me as deeply. There are a host of other benefits that I won’t list at this time, but I think you understand where I am coming from.

But just in case you don’t get any of what I just said let me simplify it here:

· Only you have the power to stop you...no one else

· Remain disciplined in the things that you know fuel you and keep you going

· Surround yourself with people who are like-minded (if that’s not an actual person yet, you can find these connections online and in books)

· Take care of your physical body by eating mostly nutritious foods and taking the time to exercise

Remember, the future you is waiting on you!
